Pa. will waive background check fees for school volunteers

Partners Post, June 2015

VolunteerBeginning July 25, Pennsylvania will waive fees for adults who must obtain background checks in order to volunteer their time with children at Pennsylvania schools.

As we told you a few months ago, a new state law is going into effect requiring the background checks, beginning July 1, 2015, for new volunteers and July 1, 2016, for those previously approved by schools to be volunteers. Volunteers will have to renew their background checks every three years.

The fee waiver applies to child abuse clearance statements from the Pennsylvania Department of Human Services and criminal history reports from the Pennsylvania State Police – both of which are required for volunteers under the new law. Some Pennsylvania residents will also have to obtain an FBI report, which still comes at a cost of $28.75.
